Description

Swiss steak is a classic comfort food that has been around for generations. It is made of tenderized round steak that is cooked in a tomato-based sauce until it is tender and juicy. The Instant Pot makes it possible to cook this delicious meal in a fraction of the time that it would normally take. In this recipe, the steak is cooked until it’s perfectly tender and then smothered in a delicious tomato sauce. Serve it with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or your favorite side dish.

Prep Time

It takes about 10 minutes to prepare the ingredients and get the Instant Pot ready for cooking. You’ll need to brown the steak and onions in a skillet before adding them to the pot. This will ensure that the steak is tender and flavorful.

Cook Time

Once all of the ingredients have been added to the Instant Pot, the cook time is only 15 minutes. The Instant Pot uses high pressure to cook the steak quickly and evenly, so you don’t have to worry about overcooking it. After the time is up, you can quick-release the pressure and your Swiss steak will be ready to eat.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound round steak, cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup beef broth

Instructions

1. Turn the Instant Pot to the “Sauté” setting. Add the olive oil and when it is hot, add the steak. Brown the steak on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Remove the steak from the pot and set aside.

2. Add the onion to the pot and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir together and cook for 1 minute.

3. Add the beef broth and stir to combine. Add the steak back to the pot and turn the Instant Pot off. Secure the lid and make sure the valve is in the “Sealing” position.

4. Turn the Instant Pot on to the “Manual” setting and set the timer for 15 minutes. When the timer is done, quick-release the pressure.

5. Carefully remove the lid and stir the steak. Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Equipment

  • Instant Pot
  • Skillet
  • Spatula
  • Measuring spoons

Notes

You can also use a slow cooker to make this recipe. Simply brown the steak in a skillet, add all of the ingredients to the slow cooker, and cook on low heat for 8-10 hours. The steak will be just as tender and delicious.

Recipe Tips

Make sure to use a high-quality round steak for this recipe. Look for one that is well-marbled with fat and has a deep red color. If you can’t find round steak, you can also use sirloin steak or chuck roast.

If you want to make this recipe even faster, you can use pre-made tomato sauce instead of the diced tomatoes and tomato paste. Simply add the sauce to the pot along with the other ingredients and cook as directed.

If you like your Swiss steak to be extra saucy, you can add a cup of beef broth or water to the pot before cooking. This will create a thicker sauce that is perfect for serving over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
