Ingredients

  • 1 cup mung beans (moong dal), washed and drained
  • 1/2 cup basmati rice, washed and drained
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 2-3 green chilies, sliced
  • 2 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

1. Set the Instant Pot to sauté mode, and heat the ghee. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then add the mustard seeds and let them pop.

2. Add the hing and green chilies, and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then add the mung beans and rice, and stir to combine.

3. Add the spices (turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala), and stir to combine.

4. Add the water, and stir to combine. Add salt to taste.

5. Close the lid and set the Instant Pot to “Pressure Cook” mode and cook on high pressure for 10 minutes. When done, let the pressure release naturally.

6. When the pressure is released, open the lid and stir the khichdi. Add the chopped cilantro and stir to combine.

7. Serve the Instant Pot moong dal khichdi hot with yogurt, pickle, and papad.
